The Terminology and Basic Concepts of Corrugated Cardboard

Three layers of thick paper stock are bonded together to make corrugated. Next, a layer of grooved cardboard is placed between two flat outer pieces known as liners. Fluted cardboard is a wavy piece of paper stock that comes in various widths to give varying strength levels.

Corrugated Cardboard Packaging’s Life Span

Corrugated boxes are used to ship 95 percent of all items in the United States because they are cost-effective, lightweight, and recyclable. Step 1. Obtaining Components 

Corrugated cardboard is commonly manufactured using recycled material. It is frequently acquired from old cardboard and paper stock. Recycled cardboard uses only approximately 75% of the energy required to manufacture new cardboard. Unfortunately, the fibers in cardboard deteriorate with each recycling cycle. As a result, cardboard may only be recycled about eight times.

While most corrugated boxes are made from recycled paper, fresh cardboard must be made from virgin pulp collected from newly harvested trees. Corrugated cardboard is made chiefly from fast-growing, environmentally friendly pine trees. The trunks of the trees are sent to a pulp mill after they have been chopped down and stripped of their branches.

Step 2. The Composting Procedure 

The kraft process is used to convert the wood into paper at the mill. Tree trunks are first converted into wood chips, then chemically treated to break down the wood into a fibrous pulp. The fibers are transferred to the paper machine after pulping and processing, where they are molded, pressed, burned, and rolled into large, heavy rolls of brown craft paper.

Step 3. Fluting and production

The kraft paper rolls are put through a corrugated roller machine to generate the wavy paper stock in the center. Corrugated rollers, on the other hand, have been present since the 18th century and were formerly used to create ruffles for shirts and caps. After the paper has passed through the corrugator, the liners are adhered to both sides using adhesive. After the corrugate has been assembled, it is cut into the proper box form and is ready to be boxed, bundled, and distributed

Step 4: Applications

The food and transportation sectors are the most common users of corrugated cartons. Corrugated boxes are economical to produce and offer a solid cushion for things housed within, ensuring that they can be transported safely. This form of packaging is not only sturdy, light, and cost-effective, but it is also food safe. Custom corrugated boxes are frequently made using environmentally friendly glues, making them safe for food storage and good for the environment.

Step 5. Recycling

Corrugated boxes are separated into recycling and returned to the paper mill once they have been used. The procedure starts all over again there! All coloring and stables are removed from the corrugated cardboard after being soaked with water and chemicals to break it down. The corrugated is then broken down and combined with virgin fibers before being rebuilt into new corrugated cartons!

 

Corrugated cardboard can be recycled up to eight times, making it one of the most environmentally friendly and cost-effective packaging options available. In addition, using environmentally friendly glues, such as liquid or gelatin-based glues, makes recycling corrugated much easier and more environmentally beneficial.
